When an alarm is raised, MapR can send an email notification to either or both of the following addresses:

  • The owner of the cluster, node, volume, or entity for which the alarm was raised (standard notification).
  • A custom email address for the named alarm.

Enabling automatic email notifications consists of these three steps:

  1. Set up SMTP to configure your cluster to use your SMTP server to send email.
  2. Specify the email addresses of MapR users.
  3. Set up alarm notifications.

The first step is explained in Setting Up SMTPThe second and third steps are explained below.

Specifying Email Addresses of MapR Users

Specify the email addresses of MapR users by one of these methods:

  • By domain
  • From an LDAP directory
  • Manually, for each user

To configure email by domain:

  1. In the MapR Control System, expand the System Settings Views group and click Email Addresses to display the Configure Email Addresses dialog.
  2. Select Use Company Domain and enter the domain name in the text field.
  3. Click OK to save the settings.

To configure email from an LDAP directory:

  1. In the MapR Control System, expand the System Settings Views group and click Email Addresses to display the Configure Email Addresses dialog.
  2. Select Use LDAP and enter the information about the LDAP directory into the appropriate fields.
  3. Click OK to save the settings.

To configure email manually for each user:

  1. Create a volume for the user.
  2. In the MapR Control System, expand the MapR-FS group and click User Disk Usage.
  3. Click the username under Accounting Entity to display the User Properties dialog.
  4. Enter the user's email address in the Email field.
  5. Click OK to save the settings.

Setting up Alarm Notifications from the Command Line

One way to set up alarm notifications is by issuing the alarm config save command from the command line.

You must have fc (full control) or a (admin) permissions to run this command.

The format of the command is:

Assign values as follows:

Specifies whether individual alarm notifications are sent to the default email address for the alarm type.

  • 0 - do not send notifications to the default email address for the alarm type
  • 1 - send notifications to the default email address for the alarm type

emailOne or more email addresses other than the default email address. If specified, alarm notifications are sent to these addresses, regardless of whether they are sent to the default email address. Multiple email addresses must be separated by spaces only. You cannot use commas or other delimiters. For example, user1@mycorp.com user2@mycorp.com is valid.user1@mycorp.com

Setting up Alarm Notifications from the MCS

You can also set up alarm notifications from the Alarms view in the MapR Control System (MCS)

To set up alarm notifications using the MCS:

  1. In the Navigation pane, expand the Alarms group and click the Alerts view.
  2. Click Alerts to display the Alerts dialog.
  3. For each Alarm Name:
    • To send notifications to the owner of the cluster, node, volume, or entity: select the Standard Notification checkbox.
    • To send notifications to an additional email address, type an email address in the Additional Email Addresses field. Multiple email addresses must be separated by spaces only. You cannot use commas or other delimiters. For example, user1@mycorp.com user2@mycorp.com is valid.
  4. Click OK to save the configuration changes.
